Can a Plane Be a Tax Deduction?

Sometimes — and it is one of the most audited answers in the code.

An aircraft used in a real trade or business can be depreciated and its operating costs deducted, the same as any other business asset. What makes aircraft difficult is that personal enjoyment is obvious, records are demanding, and the dollar amounts attract attention.

What to know

Ordinary and necessary, as always
The business must genuinely need the travel. Saved time between locations poorly served by airlines is the usual justification.
Depreciation and bonus
Business aircraft carry a defined recovery period and can qualify for bonus depreciation in years Congress allows it.
Personal use is disallowed and taxable
Personal flights reduce the deduction and create imputed income to the executive or owner who takes them.
Leasing to your own company
Owning the plane in a separate entity that leases it to the business adds structure but also adds passive-activity and self-rental complications.
Flight-by-flight logs
Passenger names, business purpose, and destination for every leg. This is the single most common point of failure.

The tax benefit

A qualifying business aircraft can generate very large depreciation deductions, plus ongoing deductions for fuel, hangar, crew, and maintenance.

Worked example

The multi-site operator

A company with plants in four rural towns buys a light aircraft, logs 85% business flights, and depreciates that share of the cost while deducting the same share of operating expenses.

Watch out for

  • The hobby-loss and entertainment-use rules bite hard here.
  • Passive activity rules can suspend the loss if the leasing structure is careless.
  • Expect scrutiny; the deduction is legitimate but the documentation standard is high.
